What are Bone Metastases?

Bone metastases (also called bone mets) are areas of cancer that have spread to the bones from another part of the body. Cancers that commonly spread to bones include:

• Multiple myeloma

Symptoms of Bone Metastases

• Bone pain: Often the first symptom, may worsen at night or with activity
• Fractures: Weakened bones are prone to breaking with minimal trauma
• Spinal cord compression: Can cause weakness, numbness, or paralysis
• High blood calcium (hypercalcemia): Causes confusion, nausea, constipation

Interventional Treatments at IYA Medical

Percutaneous Ablation

Using image guidance, we can destroy cancer cells in bone tumors using:

• Radiofrequency ablation (RFA): Uses heat to destroy tumor cells
• Cryoablation: Freezes and kills cancer cells
• Microwave ablation: Uses microwave energy for tumor destruction

These procedures can significantly reduce pain and may slow tumor growth.

Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty

For spine metastases causing vertebral fractures, we inject bone cement to:

• Stabilize fractured vertebrae
• Reduce pain rapidly
• Restore vertebral height (kyphoplasty)
• Prevent further collapse

Embolization

By blocking blood supply to tumors, embolization can:

• Reduce tumor size
