Venous Insufficiency Treatment

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) occurs when leg veins cannot adequately return blood to the heart, leading to blood pooling and leg symptoms. At IYA Medical, we offer comprehensive evaluation and treatment for venous insufficiency to restore healthy circulation and relieve symptoms.

What is Venous Insufficiency?

Healthy leg veins have one-way valves that keep blood flowing upward toward the heart. In venous insufficiency, these valves become damaged or weakened, allowing blood to flow backward and pool in the legs. Over time, this leads to progressive symptoms and complications.

Symptoms of Venous Insufficiency

  • Leg swelling (edema), especially at the end of the day
  • Aching, tired, or heavy legs
  • Pain that worsens when standing and improves when elevating legs
  • Varicose veins
  • Skin changes: discoloration, thickening, scaling
  • Itching or burning sensation
  • Restless legs
  • Leg cramps
  • Venous ulcers (in advanced cases)

Stages of Venous Insufficiency

  1. Stage 1: Spider veins and small varicose veins
  2. Stage 2: Larger varicose veins with symptoms
  3. Stage 3: Leg swelling (edema)
  4. Stage 4: Skin changes (discoloration, eczema)
  5. Stage 5: Healed venous ulcer
  6. Stage 6: Active venous ulcer

Risk Factors

  • Previous blood clots (DVT)
  • Family history of vein problems
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Prolonged standing or sitting
  • Female gender
  • Age over 50
  • Leg injury

Treatment Options at IYA Medical

Compression Therapy

Medical-grade compression stockings are often the first-line treatment, helping to improve blood flow and reduce symptoms.

Endovenous Ablation

For diseased veins, we offer minimally invasive treatments:

  • Laser ablation (EVLA): Uses laser energy to close damaged veins
  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA): Uses heat energy to seal veins
  • Both procedures are done in-office with minimal downtime

Sclerotherapy

A solution is injected into smaller veins, causing them to close and fade.

Venous Stenting

For vein blockages, stents can be placed to restore blood flow.
